Cernunnos – Celtic Stag Horned God
This image is from an inner plate of the Gundestrop Cauldron where he appears in his aspect as Lord of the Animals. In his left had he holds the ram-headed serpent, on his right he holds the magical torc.
Cernunnos is a complex and powerful god. From his early origins as a God of the Hunt, he became associated with animals, abundance, good fortune and fertility/virility. But the goal of a hunt is the death of the prey, and the hunter himself sometimes is even killed in that pursuit. Thus it is that Cernunnos is also the Lord of Death and the guardian of the underworld. He presided over the great seasonal festival of Samhain, which corresponds to Halloween.
Cernunnos appears to have been a strong yet gentle god who was especially popular with men. Though he is never shown with a consort, he is portrayed in company with many goddesses on the Gundestrop Cauldron.
